Beer Review: Fricken Wicked!

The Northeast/New England IPA (NEIPA) craze has officially taken the market by storm. We're talking cloudy, juicy hop bombs with little bitterness on the back end. The Alchemist kickstarted the craze with their now infamous Heady Topper, and right here in upstate NY Prison City Brewpub (Auburn) is now known nationally for their Mass Riot IPA thanks to a Paste magazine write up. (Seriously, look at all those NEIPA showing up in that top 10 ranking!)

While I haven't had the privilege of enjoying Heady Topper or been lucky enough to visit Prison City when Mass Riot was flowing, it's great to see more and more of these cloudy IPAs coming out of local breweries. As luck would have it, a trip to Syracuse coincided with Full Boar Craft Brewery's release of their take: Fricken Wicked! Here's my take on their offering.

Beer Details
Brewery: Full Boar Craft Brewery and Tap Room
Location: North Syracuse, NY
Beer: Fricken Wicked!
ABV: 7.2%

The appearance on this one was a nice golden/orange hue and not quite as hazy as some other NEIPAs. It has some nice tropical notes on the nose and right away my mouth is salivating for a taste.

Sure enough the Mosaic doesn't disappoint. It's one of my favorite hop varieties and I'm apparently not alone as it has really taken off in the brewing universe. It brings some wonderful tropical and berry flavors to this IPA and blends nicely with the citrus/lemon/grapefruit coming through with the other hops (Citra and Amarillo).

Fricken Wicked has a bit of creaminess to it, but a decent kick of carbonation as well. Perhaps it's the amount of flaked oats impacting the mouthfeel and look a bit here? No matter. It's just a digression. A distraction from the juicy goodness in the glass.

Samplers are tough to truly judge a beer on, so I took a 32oz growler to go just to make sure my first impression was right. And it was. This is a solid take on the style. Even better was the price point: $7 for a 32oz growler straight from the source. I'll drink to that!

Cheers!
